Freed Israeli captives slam renewed fighting in Gaza

Image
Three Israelis who were freed from Hamas captivity in January and February have joined the weekly rallies in Tel Aviv, calling for the return of those who remain in Gaza. Liri Albag, Omer Wenkert and Gadi Mozes all criticised the renewed fighting in the Palestinian enclave, expressing fear that the offensive could endanger the lives of the remaining captives, according to The Times of Israel. Albag said that “any return to fighting endangers the hostages” and that whenever the Israeli air force strikes Gaza, the captives are the first to pay the price. The soldier, who was taken from the Nahal Oz base, went on to recount the moment when the first truce deal collapsed in November 2023. “I collapsed too,” she said. “I remember that moment. One moment when everything that held us together shattered. We were sure we were leaving home. We were sure this nightmare was over. The doors didn’t open. And the nightmare continued.” She added, “There is no victory, no victory. Without all 59 ...

Rain complicates recovery in quake-hit Myanmar, death toll rises

Image
YANGON, Myanmar: Rain is compounding misery and presenting new hurdles for relief efforts on Sunday in Myanmar, where state media reported the death toll from a devastating earthquake has risen to nearly 3,500 people. The 7.7-magnitude quake struck on March 28, razing buildings, cutting off power and destroying bridges and roads across the country. Damage has been particularly severe in the city of Sagaing near the epicentre, as well as in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second city and home to more than 1.7 million people. State media in the military junta-led country now say that the earthquake has caused 3,471 confirmed deaths and injured 4,671 people, while 214 remain missing. With people either having lost their homes entirely or reluctant to spend time in cracked and unstable structures, many Mandalay residents have been sleeping outside in tents. When wind and rain began battering the rudimentary shelters on Saturday evening, victims were forced to choose between passing the night in ...

Pakistan chasing 265 to win shortened third New Zealand ODI

MOUNT MAUNGANUI, New Zealand: Rhys Mariu scored a maiden half-century as New Zealand posted 264-8 off 42 overs Saturday in the rain-shortened third one-day international against Pakistan in Mount Maunganui. Captain Michael Bracewell also surpassed 50 as the home side set a competitive total in their bid to sweep the three-match series. The contest was reduced to 42 overs each after a wet outfield at Bay Oval delayed the start of play by nearly two hours. Opener Mariu, playing just his second international match, scored a composed 58 off 61 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes. A number of New Zealand middle-order batsmen made starts but didn’t press on for big scores until Bracewell produced a flashy 59 at the death. The skipper struck six sixes in his 40-ball knock before being caught off the last ball of the innings bowled by Akif Javed. Seamer Javed took 4-62 off his eight overs although Naseem Shah was arguably the best of the Pakistan bowlers, taking 2-54 and bowling wi...

Hundreds of thousands of fleeing Gazans sought shelter on Thursday in one of the biggest mass displacements of the war, as Israeli forces advanced into the ruins of the city of Rafah, part of a newly announced “security zone” they intend to seize. A day after declaring their intention to capture large swathes of the crowded enclave, Israeli forces pushed into the city on Gaza’s southern edge which had served as a last refuge for people fleeing other areas for much of the war. Gaza’s health ministry reported at least 97 people killed in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours, including at least 20 killed in an airstrike around dawn in Shejaia, a suburb of Gaza City in the north. Later on Thursday, an Israeli airstrike killed at least 27 Palestinians, including women and children, inside a school building that served as a shelter for displaced families in Gaza City, local health authorities said. The Israeli military said the attack hit key Palestinian “terrorists.” Medics said three ...
