Israelis and Palestinians end a dark year on Sunday, with no end in sight to the deadliest military offensive on Gaza. New Year Eve: Section 144 imposed in Karachi

KARACHI: The district administration has imposed section 144 in Karachi division on the eve of New Year, ARY News reported on Saturday. According to the notification issued by the Karachi commissioner, section 144 will remain in force from Saturday (today) evening to January 1st, 2024. The notification said that aerial firing will be banned in the metropolis while strict action will be taken against the violators. Meanwhile, the Karachi traffic police have finalized a strategy to deal with drunk drivers on New year’s eve in the port city. According to DIG traffic Iqbal Dara, the police have formed separate teams to launch crackdown against drunk drivers. Mbongeni Ngema, writer of the acclaimed musical ‘Sarafina’ about student riots in apartheid Soweto, was killed in a car crash on Wednesday at the age of 68, his family announced. KARACHI: The manager of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar’s shrine in Sehwan has been suspended over theft of gold offerings to Sufi shrine, ARY News reported on Saturday. More than 1,400 people lost their lives and over 18,000 were wounded in road accidents in Karachi in 2023, ARY News reported, quoting rescue sources. DUKI: At least five passengers died including two women and a child, when a car en route to Barkhan district for a wedding met with an accident near Duki district in Balochistan, ARY News reported on Thursday. KARACHI: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday directed the Sindh chief secretary to compensate the affectees of families, who lost their homes in an anti-encroachment drive around Gujjar, Orangi Town, and Mahmoodabad Nullahs, at the earliest, ARY News reported. These orders were passed by SC Karachi Registry while hearing a plea from affectees of Gujjar, Orangi Town, and Mehmooodabad nullahs. PESHAWAR: Police on Thursday released a report on the terror incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in 2023 so far. According to the police report, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) witnessed a rise in terror incidents from 2021 as the province witnessed 1,327 incidents from 2021 till date. According to the report, as many as 260 terror incidents were reported in 2021, while 495 times terrorists attacked various installations in 2022. ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) has sought extension in nominations filing period for candidates, in a letter to the chief election commissioner, ARY News reported on Wednesday. JUI Senator Kamran Murtaza in a letter to the CEC, has said that the political parties have to distribute tickets to their candidates after the election commission’s announcement of the election schedule. He has requested to the electoral body to extend three days in its time for submitting nomination papers by election candidates. General elections: ECP starts training of DROs, ROs

ISLAMABAD: The training of the newly appointed District Returning Officers (DROs) and Returning Officers (ROs) to facilitate the oversight of the 2024 general elections has commenced today (Sunday), ARY News reported. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) spokesperson, 144 District Returning Officers and 859 Returning Officers are being given training. The development comes after Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan suspended a Lahore High Court (LHC) order on the appointment of returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs) from the bureaucracy, which cast uncertainty over holding of general polls. In yet another sexual abuse incident, a 12-year-old domestic worker was raped at gunpoint in Okara, Punjab, ARY News reported on Sunday.  According to police, a 12-year-old domestic help was abused in Al-Qudus Town, Okara. ISLAMABAD: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) on Thursday recalled three batches of Dolor DS painkiller syrup after the revelation that it lacks enough elements to cure the patients , ARY News reported. The Dolor DS suspension is manufactured by Adamjee Pharmaceuticals Karachi. According to an alert issued by DRAP, Dolor DS 100mg/5mL Suspension (Batch # 1236,1237 and 1238) lacks the required quantity of Sodium that can cause reactions in patients. The regulatory authority further said the use of the painkiller syrup can cause pain in the body, weakness, throat swelling and eye infection. Adamjee Pharmaceuticals has been directed not to supply the three affected batches for sale in the market. RAWALPINDI: Pakistan authorities foiled a bid to smuggle ‘US-made weapons’ from Afghanistan by seizing a truck loaded with onions at the Torkham Border.  As per details, the US-made weapons, left in Afghanistan after the departure of the forces were attempted to smuggle to Pakistan, concealed in the onion sacks. Upon checking by the Pakistan Customs and the security forces personnel, the weapons concealed in the onion sacks were recovered. The recovered US-made weapons include M4, Kalashankov, American Riffle, Leaser beams, night vision sites and bullets in large numbers. The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody for interrogation.
