Russia releases 10 Ukrainian civilian prisoners: Zelensky

Image
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday 10 civilians, including a politician and two priests, taken prisoner in Russia and Belarus had been freed in a deal mediated by the Vatican. Russia and Ukraine have exchanged hundreds of prisoners throughout their two-year conflict, typically in one-for-one swaps, but the release of civilian prisoners is rarer. “We managed to return 10 more of our people from Russian captivity,” Zelensky said in a post on Telegram. It was not immediately clear if the release was part of an exchange deal involving Russian prisoners held in Ukraine. Some of those released have been in prison since 2017, he said, arrested in Russian-controlled parts of eastern Ukraine that at the time were run by Moscow-backed separatists. Russia has since annexed four Ukrainian regions — Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhia — alongside the Crimea peninsula which it seized in 2014. The list of those freed included Nariman Dzhelal, a senior Crimean Tatar politi

Along with his fellow statistician Tony Lewis, Duckworth devised the formula that was officially adopted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1999. The London-based Royal Statistical Society (RSS) said in a statement: “Frank will be remembered largely for his contributions to the Society as editor of  RSS News , and to cricket as the co-inventor of the Duckworth-Lewis method.” Duckworth introduced a short paper, titled ‘A fair result in foul weather’ at an RSS conference in 1992. The paper was directly inspired by the farcical ending to the 1992 World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa in Australia, when a short spell of rain played havoc with calculations and left South Africa targeting an impossible 22 runs off one ball. Oil slips on US growth worries, ample crude supply

Image
Oil prices fell in early trade on Thursday, as investors digested that the U.S. Federal Reserve had likely pushed back a possible interest rate cut to December, while ample U.S. crude and fuel stocks also weighed on the market. Brent crude futures lost 23 cents, or 0.3%, to $82.37 a barrel, as of 0415 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 20 cents, or 0.3%, to $78.30. Both benchmarks had gained about 0.8% in the previous session. The Fed held rates steady on Wednesday and pushed out the start of policy easing to perhaps as late as December. Higher borrowing costs tend to dampen economic growth, and can by extension, limit oil demand. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said in a press conference after the U.S. central bank’s two-day policy meeting ended that inflation had fallen without a major blow to the economy, adding that there was no reason to think that can’t go on. On the supply side, U.S. crude stockpiles rose more than expected last week, driven largely by

First human case of bird flu died from multiple factors: WHO

A man infected with H5N2 bird flu, the first confirmed human infection with the strain, died from multiple factors, the WHO said on Friday, adding that investigations were ongoing. The World Health Organization on Wednesday announced that the first laboratory-confirmed human case of infection with H5N2 avian influenza virus had been reported from Mexico. Mexico’s health ministry said the 59-year-old man had “a history of chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes (and) long-standing systemic arterial hypertension”. He had been bedridden for three weeks before the onset of acute symptoms, developing fever, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, nausea and general malaise on April 17. The man was taken to hospital in Mexico City a week later and died that day. “The death is a multi-factorial death, not a death attributable to H5N2,” WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told journalists in Geneva on Friday. His body was tested for flu and other viruses, and H5N2 was detected, Lindmeier said. S
