Typhoon Bebinca: Strongest storm since 1949 lands in Shanghai

Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Shanghai on Monday morning as a Category 1 storm, the most powerful tropical cyclone to directly hit the Chinese financial hub in more than seven decades. Packing top wind speeds of 151 kph (94 mph) near its eye, Bebinca landed in the city of nearly 25 million around 7:30 a.m. (2330 GMT), state media reported, the strongest storm to strike Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949. Shanghai is rarely subject to direct hits from strong typhoons that generally make landfall further south in China. Yagi, a destructive Category 4 storm, roared past southern Hainan province last week. GUJRANWALA: Opposition Leader Omar Ayub has termed the proposed constitutional amendment a dangerous ploy. “What constitutional amendments they want to introduce are dangerous,” the leader of opposition in the National Assembly talking to media here said. PBC lashes out at govt over ‘secret’ constitutional amendments

Constitutional amendment: NA session rescheduled

ISLAMABAD: The important National Assembly session to review constitutional amendments has been rescheduled to 4:00 pm today (Sunday), ARY News reported. As per details, the NA secretariat issued notices regarding the new schedule of the session, stating that session was delayed on the recommendations of the Parliament special committee. New airlines seek CAA nod to operate flights in Pakistan

KARACHI: Several new airlines are considering to launch operations in various cities in Pakistan, ARY News reported on Friday, quoting Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). As per details, new local airlines including Jet Green, Q Airways, and Go Green Air have approached the CAA for licenses and permits, according to sources. Air Indus has also contacted the Civil Aviation Authority to resume flight operations, sources revealed. PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zartaj Gul on Wednesday moved Peshawar High Court (PHC) for transit bail following the registration of case against her in Islamabad after September 8 rally. Zartaj Gul in her plea stated that a case had been registered against her in Islamabad for ‘holding a public rally’. Citing, the arrest of many MNAs from the Parliament House, the former minister pleaded with the high court for transit bail. Islamabad police took more Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders into custody who had sought refuge inside the parliament house, ARY News reported. The Capital police arrested MNAs Zain Qureshi and Sheikh Waqas Akram from inside the Parliament House. Additionally, police detained Owais Ahmed Chatha, Syed Shah Ahmed, Sunni Ittehad Council’s Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Yousaf Khan, Maulana Naseem Shah, and Ahmed Shah Khattak. Earlier, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, Sher Afzal Marwat, and Shoaib Shaheen were also arrested. Additionally, three cases have been registered under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill in Islamabad, citing violations of the event’s NOC. South Waziristan: Man killed, three injured in Wana explosion

WANA: A man killed, and three others injured in an explosion in Karikot village bazaar adjacent to Wana in South Waziristan district, ARY News reported on Sunday. “The blast reported in Karikot village market in a vehicle that killed a man and injured three others,” local police said. “The man killed in the explosion has been identified as Shamsuddin s/o Malik Jamil,” according to police. The rescue officials reached the spot and rushed the injured and the body to the district headquarters hospital in Wana. Three persons were dead in a remote-controlled bomb blast in Wana, last year in November. The explosion took place in Duja Ghondai area of Wana where a bomb was planted in a shop. The explosion resulted in killing of three people including Malik Aslam Noor and his 12-year-old son. The deceased had earlier lost elder brother and three nephews in bomb blasts. At least 17 pupils have died after a fire ripped through their school dormitory overnight in central Kenya, police said Friday. The blaze in Nyeri county’s Hillside Endarasha Academy broke out at around midnight, police said, engulfing a dormitory where the children were sleeping. “There are 17 fatalities from this incident and there are also others who were taken to hospital with serious injuries,” said national police spokesperson Resila Onyango. Police did not release the ages of the victims. “The bodies recovered at the scene were burnt beyond recognition,” she said. Several others were injured, Onyango said, 16 of them seriously, and had been rushed to a nearby hospital. “More bodies are likely to be recovered once (the) scene is fully processed,” she said. LHC judge recuses himself from hearing firewall, WMS case

Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Faisal Zaman on Friday recused himself from hearing the petition challenging the implementation of the firewall and web management system. KARACHI: The Sindh government’s decision to purchase 138 double-cabin vehicles for Assistant Commissioners (ACs) has been challenged in the Sindh High Court (SHC), ARY News reported. As per details, the petition, filed by Jamaat-e-Islami MPA Muhammad Farooq, argued that the purchase is unnecessary and a waste of public funds. Punjab reported 17 new dengue cases during last 24 hours, taking the overall number to 396 in 2024, so far, ARY News reported on Thursday, quoting provincial health department spokesperson. Dengue virus is a  mosquito-borne viral disease  that has rapidly spread in recent years around the world. ISLAMABAD: The federal government has released Rs2 billion for Pakistan Bait-ul-Maal, a welfare organization that provides financial assistance to needy individuals and families, ARY News reported citing sources. According to sources, the funds will be used to address the backlog of thousands of pending applications for medical treatment, education, and financial assistance. Previously, the lack of funds had resulted in over 28,000 applications being pending, including requests for medical treatment, educational scholarships, and financial assistance sources said. Specifically, over 13,000 medical cases were pending, and the release of funds will now enable their processing. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on Tuesday moved Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the transfer of May 9 cases to military courts, ARY News reported. The PTI founder filed a plea through his lawyer Aziz Karamat Bhandari.
