Trump says US, India still negotiating after 25% US tariff threat

Image
President  Donald Trump said the United States is still negotiating with India on trade after announcing earlier in the day the U.S. would impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from the country starting on Friday. The 25% tariff, as well as an unspecified penalty announced by Trump in a morning social media post, would strain relations with the world’s most populous democracy. Later at the White House, the Republican president indicated there was wiggle room. “They have one of the highest tariffs in the world now, they’re willing to cut it very substantially,” Trump told reporters. “We’re talking to India now – we’ll see what happens … You’ll know by the end of this week.” The 25% figure would single out India more severely than other major trading partners, and threaten to unravel months of talks between the two countries, undermining a strategic partner of Washington’s and a counterbalance to China. What the penalty would be was not clear. Trump indicated initially, in a p...

Google clinches milestone gold at global math competition

Image
Alphabet’s Google and OpenAI said their artificial-intelligence models won gold medals at a global mathematics competition, signaling a breakthrough in math capabilities in the race to build systems that can rival human intelligence. Both companies’ models solved five out of six problems, achieving the result using general-purpose “ reasoning ” models that processed mathematical concepts using natural language, in contrast to the previous approaches used by AI firms. While Google DeepMind worked with the IMO to have their models graded and certified by the committee, OpenAI did not officially enter the competition. The startup revealed their models have achieved a gold medal-worthy score on this year’s questions on Saturday, citing grades by three external IMO medalists. The achievement suggests AI is less than a year...

Israeli tanks pushed into southern and eastern districts of the Gazan city of Deir al-Balah for the first time on Monday, an area where Israeli sources said the military believes hostages may be held. The area is packed with Palestinians displaced during more than 21 months of  war in Gaza , hundreds of whom fled west or south after Israel issued an evacuation order, saying it sought to destroy infrastructure and capabilities of the militant group Hamas. Tank shelling in the area hit houses and mosques, killing at least three Palestinians and wounding several others, local medics said. “U.N. staff remain in Deir al-Balah, and two U.N. guesthouses have been struck, despite parties having been informed of the locations of U.N. premises, which are inviolable. These locations – as with all civilian sites – must be protected, regardless of evacuation orders,” U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. The World Health Organization said its staff residence and main warehouse in Deir ...

Zero-mileage used cars have emerged in China as a result of the uniquely cutthroat competition for sales in the world’s largest auto market, which is reeling from a brutal, years-long  price war  caused by chronic overcapacity. The practice involves insuring a new vehicle before it is sold, allowing automakers and their dealers to meet sales targets. But it can create hassles for customers. Auto Review, a publication run by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, reported the plan in an editorial published on its WeChat account. It said that the China Automobile Dealers Association, another industry group, had separately proposed a code system for  exports of used cars . The editorial added that Chery and BYD, were am...
