Canada PM hails ‘rule of law’ after arrests in Sikh separatist murder

MONTREAL: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday acknowledged fear in Canada’s Sikh community but underscored the “rule of law” after three arrests in connection with last year’s killing of a Sikh separatist in Vancouver. Police arrested three men on Friday for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which triggered a diplomatic rift between Canada and India last fall after Trudeau suggested Indian government involvement in the homicide. KABUL: Six people were killed when a gunman stormed a mosque in western Afghanistan, a government spokesman said Tuesday. Interior ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said that on Monday around 9:00 pm (1630 GMT) “an unknown armed person shot at civilian worshippers in a mosque” in Herat province’s Guzara district. “Six civilians were martyred, and one civilian was injured,” he wrote on social media platform X early Tuesday morning. The state-run Bakhtar News Agency gave the same death toll for the attack, which took place in a district just south of the provincial capital of Herat city. Citing local sources, domestic media channel Tolo reported the mosque belonged to Afghanistan’s minority Shiite community. TAIPEI: Taiwan’s defence ministry said Saturday it had detected 22 Chinese warplanes and drones around the self-ruled island in a window of less than three hours. The sorties come less than a month before the May 20 inauguration of new Taiwan president Lai Ching-te, who China regards as a dangerous separatist. “We detected activities from 22 PLA aircraft… since 9:30 am (0130 GMT),” it said in a statement released at 12:10 pm on Saturday. “12 aircraft crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern and central air defence identification zone,” it said, adding that the warplanes and drones joined Chinese naval vessels in “joint combat patrol”. The median line bisects the Taiwan Strait, a narrow 180-kilometre (110-mile) waterway separating the island from mainland China. ISLAMABAD: The fertilizer review committee has recommended import of urea to stabilize supply and prices in Kharif season, ARY News reported on Thursday. Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain has directed for immediate import of two lac metric tonnes of urea to avoid fertilizer shortage. The urea demand will enhance by 3.6 percent in Kharif in comparison to last year, minister said. “It is necessary to import fertilizer to ensure food security in the country,” Rana Tanveer said. He said it will help to enhance farm productivity. “A timely import of urea will bring fertilizer prices down and stabilize the local urea market”, minister said. KARACHI: The Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) has announced new discovery of hydrocarbon deposits in Sindh’s Daharki area, ARY News reported on Monday. The new find, resulting from exploratory efforts at Shawal-l well, drilled in Mari Development & Production Lease (D&PL), the exploration firm informed the stock market on Monday. According to the filing, Shawal-l well was spud-in on January 27, 2024, and successfully drilled down to a total depth of 1,136 meters. During testing, the well produced 1,040 barrels of crude oil along with 2.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of associated gas at wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 953 pounds per square inch (Psi) at 32/64 inch choke size. This is the first-ever oil discovery in Mari D&PL, which has been in gas production since 1967. LAHORE: The internet and mobile services likely to remain suspended in several major cities during the by-election, ARY News reported citing sources. According to sources, the Punjab home ministry has written to federal interior ministry seeking internet suspension on the day of by-election. Sources said that the internet and mobile services will remain suspended in 13 cities including Lahore, DG Khan, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Sadiq Abad, Chakwal, Talagang, Alipur, Zafarwal, Bhakkar, Kasur, Alipur Kot Chatta. Earlier, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) ahead of the by-elections in different districts of the province. SBP reserves stay above $8bn despite $1bn repayment

KARACHI: The foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) rose by 14.4 million to $8.055 billion in the week ending April 12, the State Bank of Pakistan said on Thursday. “During the week, SBP has executed the repayment of US$ 1 billion maturing Pakistan’s International Bond (principal plus interest),” it said in a weekly statement. However, the country’s total reserves fell by $68 million to $13.374 billion. Similarly, the reserves of commercial banks decreased by $82 million to $5.319 billion. It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan and the IMF last month reached a staff-level agreement on the second and last review of the $3 billion stand-by arrangement, which, if cleared by the global lender’s board, will release about $1.1 billion to the country. The IMF’s board is expected to review the matter in late April, but no firm date has been set, a spokesperson said.
