Punjab prisons to go green with solar energy transition

Punjab government has decided to shift all 43 prisons across the province to solar energy, ARY News reported on Friday. As per details, the home department has finalized the plan and submitted it for approval to Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz after initial survey of all the jails with the assistance of the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). According to NRTC, the total cost of the project stands at approximately Rs4.35 billion, which is less than the current annual electricity and gas expenses of these jails. Currently, the annual electricity and gas bill for Punjab’s prisons has reached Rs4.5 billion. By implementing the solar energy plan in phases, the province is expected to reduce electricity costs by up to 60 per cent. The shift to green energy is projected to recover the investment within three years while providing long-term financial relief. Pakistan bonds show stability in international market

Good news for the national economy as Pakistan’s bond in the international market has achieved a three-year stable level, reflecting growing confidence in the country’s Eurobond, ARY News reported on Friday, citing sources. According to sources, all default risks associated with Pakistan in the global bond market have been eliminated as the Pakistan bonds are showing stability in the international market. The details show that the risk premium on Pakistani bonds has decreased from 61.4% to 7.79%. The risk on the repayment of the $1.2 billion Eurobond due in 2026 has declined to 8.5%, while the $1.5 billion bond maturing in 2027 now carries a risk of just 9.1 per cent. Similarly, the repayment risk for the $1 billion bond due in 2029 has dropped from 28.8% to 9.4 per cent. SC serves notice to Punjab Govt in GHQ attack case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a notice to the Punjab government in the GHQ attack case, ARY News reported. The notice was served following a plea filed by former interior minister and Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed for acquittal in GHQ attack case. The court has directed the provincial government to submit a report in response to the appeal. A three-member bench, headed by the Chief Justice, heard the case and adjourned the proceedings for two weeks. Earlier, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed challenged his indictment in the GHQ attack case. Rasheed filed plea in the Supreme Court through his lawyer Sardar Abdul Razzaq Khan. KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi has extended the physical remand of accused Armaghan and Shiraz by five days in the Mustafa Amir murder case, ARY News reported. During the hearing, the anti terrorism court directed authorities to conduct the medical check up of both accused and submit the progress report on next hearing. Earlier, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior took notice of the case of Mustafa Amir, who was murdered last month in Karachi. The committee issued a notice to the IG of Sindh, asking him to appear before the committee on Friday, February 28, 2025. The notice states that the IG Sindh, along with other relevant police officials, should present details regarding the case, including information about Armaghan and the drug trade. Last chance for verification, digitization of arms licences

The Punjab Home Department has initiated a “last chance” verification and digitization process for manual arms licences, offering another opportunity for holders to register their licences in the computerized system. This move comes as a relief for those who missed the previous deadline of December 31, 2020, after which unregistered manual licences were marked for cancellation. Holders of old booklet-form arms licences can now apply for verification and digital registration by submitting requests to the Commissioner of the relevant division or the Additional Secretary-Judicial of the Home Department. Once applications are received, the Home Department will conduct a thorough verification of records and documents to ensure authenticity. Only the respective Commissioner or Additional Secretary-Judicial will have the authority to approve and computerize arms licences under this process.
