Over 80,000 people flee severe flooding in southwest China

Image
SHANGHAI, China: Flooding in China’s southwest has driven more than 80,000 people from their homes, state media said on Wednesday, as a collapsed bridge forced the dramatic rescue of a truck driver left dangling over the edge. China is enduring a summer of extreme weather, with heat waves scorching wide swaths of the country while rainstorms pummel other regions. Around 80,900 people had been evacuated by Tuesday afternoon in the southwestern province of Guizhou, state news agency Xinhua reported. In Rongjiang county a football field was “submerged under three meters of water”, the news agency said. Footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed severe flooding has inundated villages and collapsed a bridge in one mountainous area of the province. Rescuers pushed boats carrying residents through murky, knee-high water and children waited in a kindergarten as emergency personnel approached them, the footage showed. “The water rose very quickly,” resident Long Tian told Xinhua. “I sta...

Gold at near 2-week low after Trump announces Israel-Iran ceasefire

Gold rates fell to a near two-week low on Tuesday as risk appetite improved after U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, denting demand for safe-haven assets. Spot gold was down 0.9% at $3,338.39 an ounce, as of 0526 GMT, after hitting its lowest level since June 11 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures slipped 1.2% to $3,352.60. “It seems like there’s a good bit of geopolitical risk that’s exiting the market here near term after, of course, we have signs of de-escalation between the U.S. and Iran,” said Ilya Spivak, head of global macro at Tastylive. Trump announced a complete ceasefire  between Israel and Iran, potentially ending the 12-day conflict that saw millions flee Tehran and prompted fears of further escalation in the region. There was no immediate comment from Israel. While an Iranian official earlier confirmed that Tehran had agreed to a ceasefire, the country’s foreign minister said there would be no cessation of hostiliti...

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council Sunday that the bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites by the United States marks a “perilous turn”, warning that the region cannot endure yet another “cycle of destruction and retaliation.” The UN chief said there must be an immediate ceasefire and returned to “serious, sustained negotiations.” “The people of the region cannot endure another cycle of destruction. And yet, we now risk descending into a rathole of retaliation after retaliation,” he told the 15-member Council which is discussing U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities as Russia, China and Pakistan proposed the 15-member body adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East. Diplomats said the three countries have circulated the draft text, but whether it will be voted today remains to be seen. In his remarks, the secretary-general called for diplomacy to prevail, saying Civilians must be protected, an...

North Korea condemns US strikes on Iran

Image
SEOUL: North Korea condemned on Monday US strikes on Iran, calling it a violation of the United Nations charter and blaming the tension in the Middle East on the “reckless valor of Israel”. It marks nuclear-armed North Korea’s first commentary on the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea strongly denounces the attack on Iran by the US which severely violated the UN Charter with respect for sovereignty,” said a spokesperson of the North’s foreign ministry, according to a statement carried by the state news agency. The ongoing regional tension was an “inevitable product brought by the reckless valor of Israel”, the spokesperson added, claiming the Jewish state “has promoted its unilateral interests through ceaseless war moves and territorial expansion”. Washington claimed Sunday its strikes “devastated” Iran’s nuclear programme, but has insisted it is not seeking to topple the government in the Islamic republic. “Monum...

Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior.” He added that Iran “reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people”.
