Greece’s National Day Celebrated in Washington D.C

The Embassy of Greece in Washington D.C. hosted an event to celebrate Greece’s National Day, which was attended by diplomats from various countries and members of the press. However, this year’s celebrations were subdued in light of the recent train accident tragedy that occurred in Greece.

Greece’s National Day, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated on March 25th every year. This day marks the country’s declaration of independence from Ottoman rule in 1821. It is a significant day for Greeks all around the world, and celebrations are held in various cities where Greek communities reside.

The event hosted by the Embassy of Greece in Washington D.C. was a representation of the country’s culture and traditions. However, due to the recent tragedy in Greece, where a train derailed and killed dozens of people, the event was not as lively as in previous years. The Embassy decided not to play music during the celebrations as a sign of respect for the victims of the accident.

Despite the somber mood, the event was an opportunity for the Greek community to come together and commemorate their country’s history and culture. The guests were treated to traditional Greek food and drink, including baklava, tzatziki and Lamb chops.

Apart from the Ambassador, Ms. Erika Olson Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian affairs, and Mr. Geoffrey Pyatt, Assistant Secretary Bureau of Energy Resources also delivered remarks. Congressman Gus Bilirakis and Chris Pappas were also present at the reception.

The Greek Ambassador to the United States, Alexandra Papadopoulou, gave a speech thanking the guests for their support and highlighting the importance of Greece’s National Day.

The event was also attended by members of the press, who were interested in covering the celebration and learning more about Greek culture. They had the opportunity to interview guests and learn about the significance of Greece’s National Day.

Greek diplomats while chatting with the reporters said that the celebrations hosted by the Embassy of Greece for Greece’s National Day were a way to honor the country’s culture and traditions. “The event brought together members of the Greek community and guests from various countries”.

“The decision not to play music was a respectful tribute to the victims of the train accident tragedy in Greece. It was a reminder that, even in moments of celebration, it is important to remember those who have suffered and to show respect and compassion’ a Greek diplomat observed.
